Remote / Virtual Leadership Hiring

Remote / Virtual hiring is the latest trend in leadership hiring.

We have been doing virtual leadership hiring for 4 years now and have done 100+ positions in the past 4 years.

Sharing with you what we have learnt:

Potential benefits and drawbacks to hiring leaders remotely:

Benefits of remote hiring in leadership positions:

Ability to access a wider pool of candidates: When hiring remotely, organizations can consider candidates from anywhere in the world, rather than being limited to those who live in the same location. This can help organizations find the best fit for leadership roles, regardless of geography.

Reduced cost: Hiring remotely can save organizations money on things like relocation expenses and office space.

Increased productivity: Some research has shown that remote workers can be more productive than their office-based counterparts, as they have fewer distractions and are able to work in a more focused and personalized environment.

Improved work-life balance: Remote work can allow employees to have more control over their work schedule and environment, which can lead to improved work-life balance.

Drawbacks of remote hiring in leadership positions:

Communication challenges: Managing a team remotely can be more difficult than managing one in person, as it can be harder to build rapport and trust with team members who are not physically present.

Lack of in-person collaboration: Collaborating and working together on projects can be more difficult when team members are not in the same location.

Potential for isolation: Some remote workers may feel isolated or disconnected from their team and organization, which can impact their engagement and job satisfaction.

Difficulty in assessing candidates: It can be harder to get a sense of a candidate’s fit for a leadership role when conducting interviews and assessments remotely, as you don’t have the opportunity to see how they interact with others in person.

The future of leadership hiring is definitely hybrid.

The leadership hiring process must be a combination of virtual and physical – the initial 2-4 rounds of primary screening, primary interviews and assessment along with research can be done virtual, followed with physical rounds to close faster and accurately.

Adopting hybrid style of leadership hiring can be your biggest competitive advantage in future.

How Entrepreneurship Mindset changes the game

Entrepreneurship Mindset

A short story of how the entrepreneurship mindset and initiative of Anjali Sud changed the game for Vimeo – Also appreciate the Board & Investors @Levin of Vimeo who listened to Anjali Sud. (Story Tweeted by @AniketHarathi)

Imagine trying to compete with YouTube and Netflix at the same time.

That’s what Anjali Sud faced when she joined Vimeo 6 years ago.

She quickly felt their strategy was wrong and brought it up in a meeting.

Today, as CEO, she took Vimeo public.

Here’s what happened…

1) 12 years after the company’s founding, Anjali Sud joined Vimeo as Director of Marketing.

Vimeo was on a mission to create a higher-quality alternative to YouTube.

2) In an attempt to do so, not only was Vimeo highly curating the content on its platform, they were also heavily investing in their own content.

They were to go-to spot for filmmakers and professional video creators.

3) She quickly had thoughts on Vimeo’s strategy

“I developed a point of view, myself and a few others within the company, that we probably weren’t going to compete well with Netflix in original content because we probably weren’t going to have $17 billion to spend on it”

4) And people who were seeking entertainment went to YouTube. It was proving to be a hard-to-break habit.

“Vimeo had long been a software company for filmmakers, but the market was too small”

5) She had an idea…

“There was another, much bigger market—businesses. What Squarespace and GoDaddy did for websites, we could do with video.”

6) Rather than sit idly by while ‘management’ steered the ship, Anjali went right to the top.

She called a meeting with Joey Levin, Vimeo’s parent company CEO.

7) She pitched him her idea. Pivot Vimeo from an entertainment and content source, to providing tools for small businesses to create video.

It didn’t matter where the video ended up (YouTube, etc), Vimeo would help them *make* it.

8) Small, mom-and-pop, businesses were realizing that video and the internet were core to their growth.

But they didn’t have the resources or expertise to create high-quality content. That’s where Vimeo could come in.

9) Levin was fascinated by the idea. Vimeo was struggling and losing money. What’s the worst that could happen if they gave this a try?

He decided to give her a shot. Anjali assembled a small team and started to pilot her idea.

10) She wasted no time and quickly made Vimeo a one-stop-shop to film, edit, and share video.

Sales, profit, subscribers – all the numbers surged significantly higher than they’d been the previous year.

The results were clear.

11) She was named CEO of Vimeo.

Today, 4 years after becoming the company’s chief executive, Anjali and her team took Vimeo public.

Learnings?

“An Employee with an Entrepreneurship Mindset and a Listening Board can change the fortune of any organization.”

Only way to Grow and Thrive

Only way to Grow and Thrive.

No matter what you do – the only way to Grow and Thrive is to have an “Entrepreneurial mindset”

Here are 11 ways you can develop an “Entrepreneurial mindset” immaterial of you level, function, industry or geography:

  1. Rapid Massive Action – “The path to success is to take massive, determined actions.” ―Tony Robbins. Every idea, plan, strategy, projection are merely a set of hypotheses until put into action. You need to set a direction and take Rapid Massive Action – everyday every minute.
  2. Try try till you succeed – “Just because you fall once, doesn’t mean you’re fall at everything. Keep trying, hold on, and always trust yourself, because if you don’t then who will??” – Marilyn Monroe. The best way to test your ideas, strategy, plan is to try it in various ways – learn from the experience and then try more. Do not shy in trying & experimenting.
  3. Expect positive outcomes – “No pessimist ever discovered the secret of the stars, or sailed an uncharted land or opened a new doorway for the human spirit.” – Helen Keller. Even in worst conditions take action expecting positive outcomes.
  4. Welcome Change – “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” -Winston Churchill. Change creates opportunities. If you don’t change quickly you will be out of race soon.
  5. Decide Fast – “Whenever you see a successful business, someone once made a courageous decision.” – Peter F. Drucker. Perfect situation to make perfect decisions will never arise – you must take fast decisions with incomplete information.
  6. Be Curious – “I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious.” Albert Einstein. You must ask lot of questions – consume huge amounts of information and look for patterns. Curiosity gets you opportunities, help you in solving problems and discover new ways of doing things.
  7. Take Risks – “Fortune sides with him who dares.” – Virgil Research. Study the situation, assess the risk and then manage the risk – but take the risk. Nothing is sure or guaranteed in life – but you have to still move with the risks. Remember – No Risk No Reward.
  8. Keep people happy – “That’s what people do who love you. They put their arms around you and love you when you’re not so lovable.” – Deb Caletti. Your success entirely depends on how happy people around you are. That includes internal people (Employees & Suppliers) and external people (Customers & Network). Talk to them. Appreciate them. Learn from them. Share with them. Keep your promises.
  9. Focus and prioritize – “Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem. We all have twenty-four hour days.” – Zig Ziglar. Focus is everything. Focus on your goals and dreams and maximize your resources and forces to achieve the same. This will help you set the right priorities and invest your time accordingly.
  10. Values & Expectations – “Your attitude is an expression of your values and expectations.” Zabid Abas. Focusing on values helps you in fast decision making. Setting right expectations from yourself and people around you – attract the right people to you and also makes work enjoyable for everyone.
  11. Be Hungry – “Stay Hungry – Stay Foolish” – Steve Jobs. Being Hungry means you always have a beginners mindset, a sense of urgency, never get tired of taking rapid massive action, take the pain required to achieve your goals, you are ready to listen, learn and adopt, achieving your goals is not a choice or an option.

Entrepreneurship mindset means Making it Happen – putting ideas to work. It is taking those insights and making them real by assembling resources, building products and generating revenues.
